A source of the rock used to create peace pipes by the various groups of Plains Indians who call the Midwest home, Pipestone National Monument is a sacred site to many Native Americans. A 3/4-mile hiking path called Circle Trail leads visitors past the rock quarries, a waterfall and other lovely natural attractions. During the summer months, there are often live demonstrations of how pipestone is molded into shapes, as well as talks on the importance of this stone to area tribes. The park is just outside the town of Pipestone, situated in the southwestern corner of the state near the South Dakota border.
Park open 24 hours daily. Visitor center open daily 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicles $5.
